The idea behind car-sharing is that several people share one vehicle as cars normally stand still 90% of a day. Through car-sharing the utilization increases and the fixed costs must not be incurred only by one individual - everybody pays a small fraction of it. There are also advantages in contrast to the old-fashioned car rental model. Our StudentCars are equipped with our technology systems that allow to make online reservations and have 24/7 self-service access through an RFID access card. This means for you that you don't need to travel to remote locations to rent a car. Just take out a car from campus or other designated parking places in your neighbourhood. What is special about our business model is that we don't ask you for hundreds of Euros of deposit like regular car-sharing companies do. You also don't need a credit card to book a vehicle - it's really customized to you!
With StudentCar you simply make an online reservation whenever you want and pick-up the vehicle at the time of your reservation. A StudentCar can only be unlocked with your own personal access card during your reserved timeslot. StudentCar takes care of the insurance, maintenance, and all other fixed costs of the vehicles. The total monthly costs for owning a car about €325,- per month (ANBW,2009) - not with StudentCar car-sharing though. In addition, each StudentCar has a fixed parking spot. Therefore, there is always a parking spot available when you return the car at the end of your reservation timeslot!
